EXTINGUISHERS

All businesses must provide portable firefighting equipment and we supply, commission, install and maintain extinguishers of all types. Equipment maintenance by a competent person or company is an annual requirement for many types of business.

Extinguishers are serviced to BS5306-3 by Our fully qualified technician. All extinguishers supplied by Lochaber FIRE come with a 5 year manufactures warranty.

Commissioning is when the extinguisher is inspected and passed fit for purpose - this is something a lot of companies are not aware of as being a legal requirement. Simply buying a fire extinguisher from a retail or online outlet doesn’t make it compliant-  it still needs to be commissioned (put into service) by a competent person.

Extinguishers MUST be commissioned on site - this includes extinguishers bought online or from other outlets. They must undergo commissioning by a trained technician to put them into service and maintained yearly by a competent person. Please check your insurance requirements regarding fire extinguishers. We will work with your FIRE RISK ASSESSOR to give your business the correct fire protection it requires.

We can carry out yearly inspections and 5 or 10 year discharge testing, to ensure your equipment is in a condition that if required it will perform correctly. Not maintaining your fire extinguishers can invalidate your insurance in the event of a fire and puts your staff and customers lives at risk.

Lochaber FIRE Ltd is focused on providing excellent customer service;  we can supply and maintain your fire extinguishers with the service you require, we can train you to operate your extinguisher properly and to choose the correct one for the fire you intent to use it on.

SIGNAGE

Fire, health and safety and way-finding signage is required in the workplace to identify hazards and to provide information quickly and easily.

Fire fighting: include fire extinguisher ID signs, a simple sign telling you if it’s safe to use on whatever is on fire or fire action codes or call point signs.

Health and safety: information keeping you safe from hazardous materials or machinery, open spaces and trip hazards or sounds, just a few examples where these signs are used.

Way-finding: It doesn’t have to be in an emergency situation where way finding signs are essential - finding your way out of a building under normal conditions can be hard enough BUT add in an emergency scenario eg a fire and these signs become life saving.

Good signage saves lives

You might be familiar with your premises but given a smoke filled building even those that are familiar can easily become disorientated. Good signage to a point of safety or exit gives people reassurance they’re going to get out.

With photoluminescent signs able to keep providing this in the event of a power failure Lochaber FIRE Ltd can take care of your signage requirements. Our preferred signage for fire and way-finding-signage is JALITE photoluminescent signage that stands out from the rest.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

All businesses need to provide emergency lighting and this needs to be maintained by a competent person with a yearly discharge test.

This is best done when the premise is empty of staff and customers as the test lasts for 3 hours.

During the test the batteries are checked to make sure they’re fit for purpose and provide the require levels of light to be passed fit for service.

Being plunged into darkness during a power failure or emergency situation can cause people to panic and emergency lighting provides light to allow safe egress from the building.

The tests are carried out after hours as once completed the batteries need time to recharge, so the emergency lighting will be non effective during this time.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

FIRE DOORS

Fire doors play a huge part in our passive fire protection and depending on the rating of each door they must maintain compartmentation for 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes during a fire situation.

Non compliant and poorly fitted fire doors remove this safety barrier and can allow smoke and fire to travel throughout a building unchallenged.

With smoke seals and intumescent seals, any gaps are closed and the door should hold back fire and smoke long enough to allow firefighters to rescue you.

In many areas of the UK Fire door inspection is now a legal requirement and some doors need inspecting every 3 months to assess if they are fit for purpose.

Poorly fitted or non compliant doors will not hold back fire or smoke and the consequences of this can be deadly.

DUTY HOLDER / RESPONSIBLE PERSON

THE Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Regulatory Reform Order 2005 give guidance on all aspects of fire safety that the Duty Holder (the expression used in Scotland) or the Responsible Person (used in England and Wales) must adhere to.

To do this you require the services of a competent person (someone with training and experience) to carry out and make sure you are safe and compliant - we would be delighted to assist you in this.

PAT TESTING

Do you maintain your portable electrical equipment?  Yearly testing of portable appliances (anything with a plug) is essential in keeping you, your employees and your customers or guests safe from shock or electrocution.

PAT testing is a simple test performed on most equipment annually (except on construction sites etc where testing is more frequent) and it could save a life.

Employers, guest house owners, etc, are required to take steps to provide safe equipment, so don’t leave it to chance that your equipment is safe. Get it tested.
